We’re From The Government and We’re Here To Help
I got a call, earlier this week, from one of my customers. They said someone called them claiming to be from “the U.S. government” (with a heavy accent), from the 202 Area Code (Washington DC). They said there were problems on their (my customer’s) computer and they were going to guide my customer through the process of removing them. They left a callback number, with a 512 (Austin TX) Area Code.
THIS IS A TOTAL SCAM. THEY’RE NOT WITH THE U.S. GOVERNMENT AND THEY’RE VERY LIKELY NOT EVEN CALLING FROM INSIDE THE COUNTRY. THEY WANT ACCESS TO YOUR COMPUTER, SO THEY CAN RUN THEIR SOFTWARE AND FIND “ERRORS”. THEN THEY’LL CHARGE YOU TO REPAIR THE “ERRORS”.
Not only will your computer be infected (very likely), but they’ll have your credit card information, to boot.
If you’re one of my customers and you receive a call like this, have them call me. If you’re not one of my customers, hang up, then call me (if you’re in the San Angelo TX area). 325-227-8657
If you’re not in my area, call a local computer repair company, in your area, just to have them check your computer for malware.
